High Income Isn’t the Same as Wealth

Earning a high income and a lot of money are great. But high income and a big paycheck doesn’t automatically make you wealthy.

The Trap of Looking Rich

If most of what you earn goes toward looking successful, you’ll eventually wonder where it all went. Income is what comes in. Wealth is what you keep and grow.

Schools don’t spend much time teaching what to do with money once you have it, so that part is on you. The good news is that financial literacy is learnable: how to save, how to invest, and how to mana with intention.

A Simple Place to Start: The 50/30/20 Budgeting Rule

If you’re not sure where to begin budgeting and managing your money, split your after-tax income like this:

  • 50% Needs: rent, food, and bills
  • 30% Wants: dining out, travel, and fun
  • 20% Future you: saving, investing, and paying off debt

You don’t need to follow these numbers perfectly. Treat them as a starting point, not a rulebook.

Start Small to Improve Your Financial Health

  1. Look at where your money goes each month. Awareness comes first.
  2. Pick one or two things to improve. Don’t overhaul everything at once.

You probably won’t transform your finances overnight. But give yourself 12 to 24 months of better habits, and you could be in a much stronger position than you are today.

The Bottom Line

Making more money helps. Knowing what to do with it matters just as much.
