“If you can learn to focus on what you have, you will always see that the universe is abundant; you will have more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never have enough.” — Oprah Winfrey
For philanthropist and TV mogul Oprah Winfrey, gratitude means noticing and appreciating what you already have rather than focusing on what is missing.
Oprah’s gratitude journal practice is simple: write down five things you are grateful for each day. They don’t have to be major accomplishments—ordinary pleasures, meaningful conversations, and small moments of beauty count. The point is to notice what is good rather than let it pass unacknowledged.
“It sounds simple, but when you go through the day staying conscious about what you put on your gratitude list, it shifts the lens through which you see the world,” Oprah explained.
In other words, the practice starts before you open the journal: you begin looking for moments worth remembering throughout the day.
In short, a fulfilling life involves more than acquiring shiny new things: it means noticing and acknowledging what is already present, making time to enjoy it, and sharing it with others…being grateful.
